Is your computer running slower than molasses? Do you yearn for the rocket like speeds your computer possessed right out of the box? Well fear not. With this tutorial you can learn some easy ways to speed up your so it runs like new again!
Reduce the amount of programs running at startup. The problem with downloading and installing new programs is every one of them wants a quick launch toolbar or to be run automatically when Windows starts. Don't allow it. In fact the only things that should be running (aside from necessary system files) are your firewall and spyware/adware/virus protection software. Anything else you can just access manually. To disable these useless startup programs go to Start>>Run>> type "msconfig" without quotes. Then select the "startup" tab and click the programs you do not want run automatically. Warning - Do not uncheck programs unless you know what they are! Simply type the program name in Google and you will get plenty of information on it. Clearing out these programs will speed up your computer by reducing the amount of virtual memory needed.
Uninstall unused programs. We have all installed our fair share of programs were thought sounded great but just end up collecting dust on our virtual shelves. Not only do they take up space but they slow our computer down as well. Bottom line - if you don't use it, then lose it! Go to Start >> Control Panel >> Software >> Add or Remove Programs. By freeing up hard drive space you are increasing the speed at which the computer can access programs. This is one of the best ways to speed up your computer
Run a disk defragmenter. This is a wonderful and free tool available to anyone with Windows to help speed up their computer easily. Basically it organizes your hard drive in a way to maximize CPU speed. I recommend running it about once a month for good maintenance. You can access it by clicking Start>>Programs>>Accessories>>System Tools>> and then click Disk Defragmenter.
Scan your PC spyware, adware, and other malware. If you are going to perform any of the following steps then be sure to do this one. While the other issues are minor annoyances that can be easily resolved, spyware is a very dangerous problem that shouldn't be taken lightly. Slowing your computer down is just the tip of the iceberg. It can steal private information (social security, credit card numbers and passwords) while potentially corrupting your hard drive.
